Please help!

I bought I house with a slate entrance way (approx. 100 sq. ft.).  The house was built in 1966.  The slate has been covered with polyurethane.  I have not been able to remove it even though I used Stone (http://g603.net) -cleaning products.  A professional will charge $1400 to clean it.  Is there a way I can remove the polyurethane from thise slate?  I would prefer not to replace it because of the mess of removing it.  Thank you for your help.
